Camp OutReach (COR) is an annual project organised by the Welfare Services Club of Nanyang Technological University with the aim of empowering the hearing-impaired (HI) community. Being awarded the Commonwealth Youth Gold Award 2004, COR took the huge step in bringing this event overseas and has not looked back ever since.
This year, COR would be organising another overseas expedition for HI youths from Singapore. It would be the eigth overseas camp, following the first seven which took place in Mount Kinabalu, Kota Tinggi, Taman Negara, Karimun Island, Bintan Island, Terengganu and Dalat, Vietnam.
The Deaf Community faces numerous challenges in their daily lives. By leading them out of their comfort zone and exposing them to various physically and mentally challenging activities, Camp OutReach strives to help the HI overcome their fears while providing them with an enriching experience.
Award
Camp OutReach's development has proved that we are moving towards the right direction. Out effort in reaching out and developing the deaf community was recognized in 2004 and we were awarded the Commonwealth Youth Gold Award. Each year, the Commonwealth Youth Project gives one Commonwealth Youth Gold Award to a country of each region, namely Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the South Pacific. That was the second time Singapore has won the award after first winning it six years ago in 1998. As the panel of judges at London stated "Camp OutReach is deserving of the region's top honour, because of its significant contribution to the society."
