COR’15 Outing 2: CIP @ Christalite Methodist Home

On 8 November 2014, the COR’15 committee and HI participants met up for the second time this year, but this time, we did not meet up to play games, this meet-up was for a CIP event at the Christalite Methodist Home (CMH). The CMH is a joint community outreach by Methodist Welfare Services (MWS) and Christ Methodist Church (CMC) and is primarily a home for the destitute and homeless in Singapore, caring for up to 224 residents, most of whom are elderly.

We started the morning, meeting at the Woodlands MRT station in the wee hours of the morning (7.30am) and took the bus CMH, where we were warmly welcomed to befriend, care and support CMH’s residents in their daily activities. The event kick-started with a CMH representative sharing with us about the activities the home often does and introduced us to the beneficiaries and other volunteers.

Thereafter, we were allocated to different stalls set up in the Home in a carnival style event. The stalls, manned by various HI volunteers and COR committee volunteers, included golf, 5 stones, Big-small, Find the Ace, Spray-Spray, Calligraphy, henna hand art and the most popular booth, the Caricature booth!

Some of us were also paired with beneficiaries, bringing them around the stalls for them to earn ice-cream sticks which can then be exchanged for food or other activities such as having henna on their hands or having their portraits drawn by the very talented Rachel, a HI volunteer!

At about 11am, the COR committee then put up a performance for the CMH beneficiaries. Ming Sheng, whose sign name refers to his love for singing, and the pretty Felicia, went up on stage to sing with their beautiful voices for the enjoyment of the beneficiaries while the rest of us spread out amongst the beneficiaries, hyping up the atmosphere. After that, part of the COR committee went up on stage to song sign the Singapore classic song, Home. Even though we did not have much time to practise song signing this song (and aided by our amazing Eelin), we were so glad that our performance ended successfully!

During our After-Action Review for this event, we found that everyone was glad to have the opportunity to share a meaningful morning with CMH. We felt that the CIP event was essential for us to broaden our view of to challenge ourselves to fulfill tasks and feeling a sense of satisfaction at having met our goals. Also, it is was a fulfilling experience to  be able to spread happiness, knowledge and experience with the less fortunate.

In addition it was a great opportunity for the committee to bond with the HI members, and to promote COR and our mission to a wider community.

As they always say, the best time to bond is over FOOD, so we ended off the day with lunch at a nearby hawker.

We are thankful to the HI members for volunteering today, and without their help, this CIP event would not have ended smoothly. Let us look forward to our next outing, the Christmas Party!! :)

Meanwhile, we wish the COR committee the best of luck for their upcoming Finals!((:

This event was proudly organised by the COR’15 Programmers, Eelin, Charmaine and Frederica.
