Ryan picked up sign language from Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Hearing Impaired! Club in 2001. Since then, he participated actively in sign language classes and song signing performances, together with his Deaf friends, which deepened his understanding of Deaf Culture and Communication. His passion in interacting with the Deaf took him another step further in 2007 as he joined Club Farrago (NTU WSC RSPHI) and Camp OutReach '08 as volunteer. This year, he takes over the leadership role from Chao Wei, and works with a new team of volunteers to bring new adventure and challenges to the Deaf in Singapore.
Interview with Ryan
1) Why do you want to join the Camp OutReach Organising Committee for the second time?
I must thank the COR'08 Committee and participants for having so much confidence in me and giving me all their support and encouragements. The reason for re-joining the Committee is because I believe it is a very meaningful camp that should be continued every year. The COR experience cannot be explained by words alone. It's simply rewarding
2) What does your new role as the Chairperson require you to do? How different is it from your job as programmer last year?
My new leadership role covers a wider scope compared to last year when I was a programmer. Designing the programme and ensuring the smooth execution of activities during camp was my main focus as a Programmer previously. Now I have to plan ahead with the Committee and support the Business Managers and Programmers in administrative matters. On top of that, I have to keep track of our progress and ensure that the best is delivered to our beneficiaries. It is definitely more challenging, but I have learnt many more things along the way.
3 ) What kind of challenges you have met thus far and how did you (will you) overcome them?
One of the greatest challenges, like for any previous Chairpersons, is to design an affordable and creative programme for our beneficiaries. On top of that, the economy, terrorism, and political instability have added on to the difficulty in searching for a suitable location to hold COR '09. Many companies/organizations are cutting costs and sponsorships recently, so the COR'09 Committee has to work doubly hard to canvass more funds so that we can make the camp affordable for our beneficiaries. Our strong teamwork and determination is the key to overcoming all these obstacles.
4) What do you hope the participants can gain or achieve from COR 09?
I hope to promote the spirit of volunteerism among NTU undergraduates, and the desire for self-improvement and greater achievements among all the participants. This camp also serves as a platform for our participants to learn some life skills, to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and to build their character. Lastly, I hope the participants will make new and long-lasting friendships
